Dad Accused of Caging Boy Sent to Prison

I'm glad this dad decided not to contest this even if he didn't confess or plead guilty. However, the thing that caught my attention was the fact that he did however blame his drug use. His lawyer stated that his judgement was clouded by the drugs. This goes back to the story the other day from Spain where a guy got out of an abuse chaarge very lightly because he said he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing....We can not let this type of thing become the norm!

YOUR WHOLE PET / Protecting victims of domestic violence by protecting their pets

I am glad to see that there are areas where things like this are getting started. I have a dog and cat and would leave neither behind in an abusive home while I left to be safe. They did not ask to be brought into that home, I would feel like I brought them there and they are mostly defenseless and I must protect them. Which I am sure is the same way alot of abuse victims feel about thier pets and thats why this one area at least has seen that by helping the animals they can help the human victim also.

There are other states that have the addition of pets on RO's now!

Unrelated attempted break-in leads to domestic violence arrest

I do not know these people so this is purely speculation....wonder if there was really an attempted break-in or had she finally figured that was a good way to get the cops there without making him suspicious? If so, great thinking on her part. Another thing I'd like to point out is that those cops are some of the first I've heard of that actually spotted a victim in need while on a call! This wasn't even a DV call and they recognised the problem and took care of it just as it should be!! We need more cops that are that way! Read the article, you'll see what I'm saying......

Spanish courts--and why I'm glad I don't live there

I have always realized that the US as a whole was further along the path towards stamping out Domestic Violence. However, I did not realize that countries that I think of as "right up there" with us as far as being "modern" were still this far behind us.....I can not say much more about these two stories without just totally going off....please read them yourself.....and be warned, you probably will get mad!

ADT partners with LMPD to protect domestic violence victims from further abuse

Here is another program that we should all try to bring into our local areas. The program is called AWARE which stands for Abused Women's Active Response Emergency. It is ran through the local police department partnered with ADT. There is certain criteria that must be met, then ADT will install and monitor an alarm system for free. This program has been around for 15 years and no one has heard of it....let's get this info out there and make sure others know about it!

Task force taking steps to curb domestic violence, stalking

The following is a kit that one DV Task Force is trying to collect to give to victims of DV that are being stalked by thier abusers. We need to get on this and try to pass this info out far and wide to get other agencies in all areas looking into this. My personal opinion is that it may not completely solve the problem but it would help!

The kits contain eight items a stalking victim can use to keep records and provide evidence of unwanted contacts by those who have abused them in the past and against whom restraining orders have been issued. The items include a cassette recorder with batteries, an instant camera, a home security alarm kit, an air horn, a whistle, a notepad and pen, a caller ID box for use with a telephone, and a pamphlet on stalking.

UAADV reaching out to more people through new WOHCA groups

I'd like to take a moment to tell you all about the new Wings of Hope- Crafty Angels groups. We have decided to have the WOHCA groups available in several different online communities in an effort to extend our ability to reach those who would like to help. With these new groups people can join a group where they already have a login and password, thus alleviating the need to make a new account in Yahoo. The Yahoo Group will not change, and the calendar will be the same across all groups so that everyone is still working towards the same goals at the same times. The new groups are:

MSN: http://groups.msn.com/WingsofHope-CraftyAngels

Google: http://groups.google.com/group/wings-of-hope--crafty-angels

MySpace: http://groups.myspace.com/wohca

phpbb: http://wohca.org/phpbb

The WOHCA website (wohca.org) has not been updated with these new groups, but as soon as it is I will let you know. Not all of the groups are completely set up, but I am working on it, please feel free to join and get started talking as soon as you want.

New Statewide helpline in Il

In addition to directly providing support to Illinois residents, the helpline will benefit other governmental and non-profit agencies and providers. All non-profit social services agencies, law enforcement, and religious and government institutions can now call 1-877-TO-END-DV for information and links to domestic violence services. The helpline is only of the most recent effort of the Blagojevich Administration to address the needs of women and children affected by domestic violence.

Family Communications - Scenes from a Shelter: Talking About Domestic Violence

This appears to be a good tool for those that work with children in relation to Domestic Violence.

Family Communications - Scenes from a Shelter: Talking About Domestic Violence

Take Pictures, they may come in handy later!

We have all at one time or another seen an article or watched a news report that relates such a horrifying story that ends up with the abuser not being convicted.  Most times it is because of lack of evidence.  One way a person can protect themselves is this:  TAKE PICTURES!!  Even if you do not call the cops, take pictures of the bruises, the red marks, cuts, whatever damage may have been inflicted.  If you have a digital camera that is the best way, those have date/time stamps.  Make sure it is clear in the pictures who the person is.  Don't just take a close up of the damage, but also take a picture farther away, trying to include the victims face.  If you are taking pictures of yourself try the best you can to just hold the camera out from you and use the zoom to get close up and farther away.  If you do have a digital camera and are afraid that the pictures will be seen, get another memory card for it.  They are so small and easy to hide.  Make sure to switch them in and out when you need to.  Some memory cards for digital cameras are so small you can hide them almost anywhere.....taped to the back of your drivers license, inside the battery area on your cell phone.  Make sure to mark it in such a way you won't get it mixed up with the one you don't mind leaving in the camera.

If you don't have a digital camera, then try to buy disposable cameras.  They are a little harder to hide but can be done.  If you use this method for taking pictures keep a little log with the camera......on it write the date, time, and what the picture is of.  Make sure to keep both of these things well hidden.....a good place to hide them would be in with your female things.....

If the cops are called, ask them to take pictures when they are talking to you seperately.  Tell them you are afraid, ask them to say it is required to take the pictures.

If you have someone else take the pictures have them write on the log that the picture they took was of you, have them write our your name and which part of the body each picture was taken of (i.e.  Sally Smith, bruised right arm).

09/19/2007 - NY, US - "In Domestic Abuse, Digital Photos Can Say More Than Victims" from NY Times
The article reports, "Polaroid photographs, like these, are being used less often in domestic violence cases. Prosecutors say digital photos are clearer, last longer and are more easily shared with other investigators."
If you or someone you know is being abused and needs help please call your local Domestic Violence Hotline or visit uaadv.org for more resources.

UPDATE:9.28.07 Unidentified girl on tape in NV--May Trigger

The above link as of now has video of the press conference today.  During that conference police indentified by name a Person of Interest to them in this case.  His name is Chester Authur Stiles, he already has warrants out for arrest in another matter.  They released the first name of the little girl being abused as Madison, they will not confirm a spelling, and said that the man in the tape called the little girl this several times during the taping.  They are asking that anyone knowing her, him or the whereabouts of either please come forward immediately.  They believe that either the mother does NOT know about this OR would not come forward.  They are fairly certain that this is not a case of kidnapping and that this man has done this to this particular girl before, based on analysis of the tape.  They honestly believe that the only thing that will crack this is going to be a tip from a care worker, relative, someone that has served one or the other in a resturant, etc.......They are still asking that this be disseminated to the fullest.  During the press conference they showed a picture of Chester Stiles, and this should be available online as soon as reporters finish writing their stories.  They still have no clue as to WHERE the tape was made or exactly WHEN but more than likely was made after Jan. 2005.  They also said they have NO CLUE where this man and little girl may be at this moment, i.e. which state.

Re: Update #2 about the video found in the desert--Possible Trigger

Just saw that the Nye County Detectives working this case have identified the older dark haired girl on the vidoe, they have confirmed that she was NEVER harmed, as the suspected.  They confirmed the portion of the video containing this girl was filmed in Nye County.  The detective would like for anyone posting the photos to stop posting the ones of the older girl since she no longer needs to be identified.  They are still searching for the younger girl and the man on the video.  They are still asking that anyone posting/emailing/blogging about this:

Update about the video found in the desert--Possible Trigger

Hi all, just wanted to share with you what I've found out about the video of the little girl being molested that was supposedly found in the desert out west......This is true, Americas Most Wanted aired it this past weekend, below is their article and two others.....there are phone numbers in the articles to call if you know the identity of any of the people pictured.  After reviewing the tape, detectives are now saying a second girl is seen on the video and she is about 10 they believe.  Detectives say that the 10 yr old is not being abused in anyway on the tape, only the 4-5 yr. old.  The AMW site has enhanced pictures of both girls and the man on the tape that are clearer than the ones going through emails.  I've gotten several emails with just the pictures of the little girl and several with just pics of the girl and the man.....if you have gotten these emails and forwarded them please also forward the links to the stories below, so that everyone out there realizes this is not a hoax!!

Police believe that the video was shot sometime around 2003 or 2004.  The man that turned in the video has been arrested and released.  Before you get all angry at that, read the articles and see why......

Money for DV Victims/Survivors

As ya'll can see I'm off on a tangent....I couldn't think of anything good to write about the news so you got just a small roll-up....it made me think....instead of just always looking for what others are doing and reporting that to you....WHY in the world am I not doing something productive like looking for help for those already out of their situations or getting ready to leave a DV relationship....isn't that what UAADV is here for to help? Well, yeah, sure we will help those seeking a shelter to take them and assist others in dealing with the emotional pieces of their lives that have been scattered by DV.....but really what could I do to help more women? So below you have my feeble attempt.....I've found four (well, there's more but I'm still checking them out) ways to help with education money, housing money, emergency funds, plastic surgery and even housing itself. I know two of the below must be filled out by the DV shelter or organization you are getting help from already.....

Where there is a will and great enough need we will find a way to make these programs work for you!!!

Advocates: If you don't already know about these they are great to keep on a back burner until someone comes to you that could benefit from them!!!

If you live in any of these states: West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina, you may be eligible for up to 24 months help in transitional housing through this organization, just read what this program offers. Look around the website you may be able to get help from them for other stuff also even if you don't need the housing. Use the Contact Us link to get the phone number and CALL THEM!!!!

Wed-Thur News Roll-up(Sep. 19-20, 2007)

The first three articles below outline some over all good information about DV in general. They give three different perspectives into the community problems that arise from DV, even through all state different statistics. I do get discouraged that these types of articles are only written around this time of year, at least they have become more informative over the past few years. I wanted to take a break from just all the bad stuff that happens in the world and have us look a little closer at the good things going on in the movement.

The last article was very interesting to me and somewhat a breath of fresh air, so to speak, to find that there are those out there trying to relate the seriousness of abuse in LGBT relationships. Most of us never think that there is DV in the LGBT community. This article describes the differences as well as the similarities of abuse in same gender vs. different gender couples. There are still DV shelters in the US that will not take in a lesbian much less a gay man. They won't even talk to them or try to help....These shelters generally will try to blame the sexual orientation as the cause of the abuse, like they don't deserve to be helped. This is a very sore subject with me, as are the DOMA Laws. It all pretty much allows those in the LGBT community to "get away" with being abusive. I'm not saying that I believe that the abuse is any worse in one situation or another, I'm just saying that it is my belief that all human beings regardless of anything, should be treated the same if they are being abused by someone else.

Mon-Tues News Roll-up(Sep. 17-18, 2007)

I'm still very disturbed that there are places in the US that do not already have DV "plans" but I guess it takes a weekend of violence for then to see they need one......I also still find it hard to believe that if a police officer is arrested for domestic violence and admits to it, which is why he was arrested, that he would get paid admin leave until the investigation is finished. What is there to investigate? He admitted it! Police officers are supposed to uphold the law, and I really don't think that after admitting to breaking a law he should get and type of paid time off. The last article here is VERY graphic, and I'm sorry to say that I'm shocked as well as pleased that it is! I think that in order to make others realize just how serious this issue is it needs to be very graphic in the main stream media, which is something we don't get very often. Maybe this will be an eye opening case for many throughout the US.
Now to the last two stories I've listed here, the first one I added only to make a point....the fact that this Senator is filing such a frivolous lawsuit in order to make HIS point. Which ultimately revolves around one main case, the last story listed here. A woman is supposed to get up in court and testify that she "had sex" with a man that raped her because the judge barred the words "rape", " sexual assault", "victim", and "assailant" from his court room. How on earth is a jury supposed to hear this case if the lawyers or the victim can not tell what actually happened? How do they decide what this man is guilty of, if anything, when they are hearing testimony from a victim allowed only to say "had sex"...which in and of itself in our culture implies consent? They are forcing her to LIE under oath!
All of these sorties from the past two days shows us this is just the type of attitude we are trying to hard to fight and overcome in America. We think we are so far ahead of the rest of the world and in many ways we are, but it is just this very type of thing that seems to make all other efforts seem to be for naught! However, there ARE good movements afoot, and if we all stand together as one voice we CAN make a difference!

Weekend Roll-up: 9/16/07

Not sure if any of you follow much about which political figures are for helping victims and survivors of DV or not, but it is something I try to keep up with a little at least. It is always a good to know thing, regardless what state you are in. Vermonts Sen. Patrick Leahy (D) has been wroking with DV groups for several years and has written legislation and gotten it re-approved for the his state. On the other side of the US however, the problem of illegal women yelling "abuse" when they are in some cases the ones doing the abusing or threatening to to, is becoming a bigger problem each year. It goes without saying that since they are hiding behind VAWA, it makes it difficult for those that are telling the truth and really do need the help. I like what I'm seeing on the front of "well-meaning men", this is something that has been discussed and tossed around for a few years now. I believe that with men taking a stance on prevention and willing others to tell men they know as abusers that what they are doing isn't right, that some violence may actually be prevented and some abusers will never reach the level of abuse that we have started to see over the past ten years. Finally I'd like to point out DV in the religious arena. This has been such a difficult area to reach into to help women. With two high profile cases in the past year, this may open the door for more to come forward. Please read through the articles below for more information on any of these topics......
